The first weekend in August once again saw anglers from all across the country descend
on the Cemex Yateley complex, to take part in the 15th Stoney & Friends Annual Fish
In and help raise much needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
A record 153 anglers registered to fish this years event, all contributing their
£30 entry fee plus any sponsorship they could gather together, and by Friday lunchtime
most of the rods were out!
Catches were slow to begin with, however by Saturday the captures began to roll in.
Ian “Chilly” Chillcott sneaked an upper 20 out of the North Lake weed, Martin “Smarts”
Lewis got the fish feeding on the top on the South lake and reports were coming in
from most of the other lakes too. The biggest fish of the weekend fell to Martin
Dezille, who landed an incredible 39lb common from the North Lake.
The event drew to a close on Sunday lunchtime, with various presentations and mega
raffle, but not before a moving tribute to Steve Hughes from Paul “Singy” Singleton.
Steve, known as Psyclops to his mates, had been a regular character at the Stoney
events over the years. Suffering with cancer himself for some time, Steve sadly lost
his battle only 2 weeks before the event. A timely reminder of the reasons everyone
had gathered that weekend.
Top 3 fundraiser awards-in 1st place Tim Paisley (£1000), 2nd Harry Andrews-Mason
(aged 8) with £673 and 3rd was Stephen Dale with £425, which along with sales of
raffle tickets during the weekend, provided an amazing total of £15250 raised from
the fish in.
This mix of fishing, fun and fundraising forms a major part of a varied programme
of events organised by Stoney & Friends throughout the year, that has seen this group
raise just over £375,000 to date for those living with cancer. For more information
